Last year, a handful of swimmers dived into the Amstel for a brand-new part of LoveSwim: the 250-meter Extravaganza. The idea? As much glitter, colour and individuality in the water as possible. One of the creators was Walter. We asked him how this cheerful swimming party came about, and what his dream is for this year.
How did you come up with the idea for the Extravaganza last year?
Walter: “It started with one simple thought: what if we brought the spirit of Pride into the water — loud, colourful, and unapologetically joyful? The Extravaganza was born out of a desire to create space for expression, not competition. We wanted to invite swimmers of all kinds to show up as their most authentic selves — with glitter, wigs, unicorn floaties, or anything that screamed you“.
Did you expect people to participate?
“Honestly? We hoped for a handful of bold swimmers, but what we got was a wave of enthusiasm we didn’t expect! People showed up with wild costumes, coordinated group routines, and the most amazing energy. It quickly became clear that the community was craving this kind of playful, free-spirited moment. It was magical“.
Did you participate yourself?
“Of course! I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I swam the 250 meters proudly. I truly believe in leading by example and showing that joy, silliness, and pride can all float together“.
What are your expectations for this year?
“Bigger, bolder, and even more fabulous! With the addition of mermaid tails, the synchronized demo, and more group performances, we’re creating even more space for imagination and connection. My dream is for everyone — swimmers and spectators alike — to feel the love, freedom, and unity that makes LoveSwim so special“.

Do you want to participate in the Extravaganza?
The Extravaganza is for all water creatures! Participate as an individual or come up with an extravagant group act together with your swimming group. The crazier, the better!
New this year: Mermaid tails!
We have purchased 10 beautiful mermaid tails that you can use during the Extravaganza. Condition: do you want to swim with a mermaid tail, and do you have no experience with it yet? Then participate in the practice session that GSA organizes before LoveSwim. You will learn how to swim safely with a tail and how to quickly take it off in an emergency.
Mermaid demonstration
Before the Extravaganza we will give a short demonstration of mermaid swimming – think of synchronized swimming, but in mermaid style! We are still looking for at least 3 participants for this. Want to participate? Let us know!
